I think that it is very important for us to be ready to speak and share our life story and how our life story is part of God's story. I am not one who believes that it is necessary to scream it from the mountaintop of bring judgment onto a person.
Now, some would argue that this type of thinking would go against The Great Commission. I disagree. We are not sitting on our hands waiting for people to come to us. This can be true for both our family (Greathouse) and the church family (Zion).
So, today, I open my Bible and find these verses that shed some light on the thinking. There are three Scriptures that I would like to share:
John 3:1-14
After dark one evening, a Jewish religious leader named Nicodemus, a Pharisee, came to speak with Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are proof enough that God is with you." Jesus replied, "I assure you, unless you are born again, you can never see the Kingdom of God." "What do you mean?" exclaimed Nicodemus. "How can an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born again?"
I love this scripture. For you see Nicodemus CAME TO JESUS. Jesus did not seek Nicodemus out. Now, previously, Nicodemus had witnessed the things that Jesus had done and then touched a spot in his heart and he wanted to know more. He wanted to be part of this. Thus, he came to Jesus. Now, also he came at dark, so no one else would see him (???). Jesus was still willing to share with him and he shared with him on his terms.
1 Peter 3:13-18
If with heart and soul you're doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you're still better off. Don't give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you're living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They'll end up realizing that they're the ones who need a bath. It's better to suffer for doing good, if that's what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. That's what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others' sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God.
Did you see that ?? I bolded the part for you. We need to be ready to tell them WHEN THEY ASK. Then, it also says this, do it with COURTESY. Thus, when you are living the life that God has called you to live, people will see it. They will notice a difference and they will ask you questions. When they ask questions, be ready to share.
James 1:26-27
Anyone who sets himself up as "religious" by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
We reach out because the Scripture tells us that we need to reach out. We need to reach out to those who are hurting, the ones that are discarded by society.
Yes, we do share our faith. We are ready to tell our story. We are ready to share god's story, but we do not shove it down a persons throat who does not want to hear it. But, just something to think about, you may have the opportunity to share the message with the person that does not want to hear it when they see you doing something for them in God's love. The reason: they may ask you, "why are you ....."
You are now invited to share the story.
My friends, live the life that God has called you to live. Live passionately and be ready because when you do, people will be begging to hear the story of why and you can then give them the greatest story ever told.
